What Are Adjectives?
An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun. Adjectives help us paint a clearer picture in our writing by telling us more about people, places, things, or ideas.
Adjectives can describe:
- Size: big, tiny, enormous, small
- Color: red, blue, golden, dark
- Shape: round, square, curved, flat
- Feeling: happy, sad, excited, nervous
- Texture: smooth, rough, bumpy, soft
- Age: old, new, young, ancient
- Quality: beautiful, ugly, delicious, terrible
Examples:
- The red car is fast. (red describes the color of the car)
- That is a huge mountain! (huge describes the size of the mountain)
- She wore a beautiful dress. (beautiful describes the quality of the dress)
Important Tip: Adjectives can be found before OR after the noun in a sentence!
- Before: The fast car zoomed by.
- After: The car is fast.
Directions: Circle the adjective in each sentence.

- The pizza smells delicious!
- My sister has curly hair.
- The frightened rabbit ran away quickly.
- This homework is easy.
- The brave firefighter saved the family.
- We sat on the soft couch.
- The teacher read an interesting story.
- My grandmother baked fresh cookies.
- The tiny ant carried a crumb.
- That movie was scary!
- The sun feels warm on my face.
- I drank cold lemonade on a hot day.
- The sleepy baby yawned.
- We climbed a steep hill.
- The angry dog barked at the mailman.
- She picked a beautiful flower from the garden.
- The sour candy made me pucker.
- I need a sharp pencil for the test.
- The hungry bear searched for food.
- That was a difficult puzzle to solve.

- The excited children ran to the playground.
- My room is messy right now.
- The smooth stone skipped across the water.
- We watched the colorful fireworks.
- The ancient tree has been here for centuries.
- I heard a strange noise upstairs.
- The polite student held the door open.
- That was a silly joke!
- The round ball rolled down the hill.
- My best friend is very funny.
- The clever fox outsmarted the hunter.
- We need a bigger box for all these toys.
- The grumpy old man yelled at us.
- I love the sweet smell of roses.
- The lazy cat slept all day long.
- She wore a sparkly dress to the party.
- The nervous boy gave his speech.
- We crossed the narrow bridge carefully.
- The frozen lake was perfect for skating.
- That restaurant serves spicy food.

- The gentle breeze felt nice.
- I petted the furry puppy at the store.
- The empty parking lot was quiet.
- My dad drives a blue truck.
- The cheerful music made everyone dance.
- We need to fix the broken window.
- The tall giraffe reached the leaves.
- I ate a crunchy apple for lunch.
- The wet grass soaked my shoes.
- That was a brilliant idea!
- The dimly lit room felt spooky.
- She has a creative mind.
- The poisonous snake stayed far away.
- I bought expensive shoes at the mall.
- The jealous girl spread rumors.
- We visited the crowded museum.
- The reliable bus arrives on time.
- I heard a faint whisper behind me.
- The clumsy waiter dropped the tray.
- That magician is very talented!
