What is an Adjective?
An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. Adjectives tell us more about people, places, or things. They describe qualities like size, color, shape, age, texture, feelings, or quantity.
Adjectives answer questions like: What kind? How many? Which one? What size? What color?
Adjective Examples
- The red car is fast. (Red describes the color of the car.)
- That is a huge mountain! (Huge describes the size of the mountain.)
- The happy children played outside. (Happy describes how the children felt.)
- She has three cats. (Three tells how many cats.)
Tips for Finding Adjectives
- Think of a noun first: Find a person, place, or thing. Then ask, “Which word describes it?”
- Ask yourself: What kind? What size? What color? How many? Which one?
- Remember the difference: Nouns name things (bird, desk, uncle). Verbs show actions (hang, jump, compete). Adjectives describe nouns (happy, large, quiet).
- Common adjective categories: Colors (blue, red), sizes (big, tiny, huge), feelings (sad, excited), textures (smooth, rough), shapes (round, square), numbers (five, many)
