A Grade 1 grammar course on the words that tell more about a naming word. “A kite” tells the reader almost nothing. “A big round red kite” puts a picture in their head.
Students learn what a describing word does, work through words for color and shape and size, and then find out where these words belong in a sentence. That last part is the piece most practice skips. A describing word usually sits right in front of the naming word, but it can also come after “is” or “are”, and students who only ever see the first pattern do not recognize the second.
